During the week of March 4-10, Hawaii Island police arrested 31 motorists for drunken driving.

During the week of March 4-10, Hawaii Island police arrested 31 motorists for drunken driving.

Seven of the drivers were involved in traffic crashes. One of the drivers was under the age of 21.

The numbers of arrests by district were: Kona, 14; South Hilo, 11; Puna, 3; South Kohala, 2; and North Hilo, 1.

So far this year, there have been 241 DUI arrests compared to 273 during the same period last year, a decrease of 11.7 percent.

There have been 244 major accidents so far this year compared to 301 during the same period last year, a decrease of 18.9 percent.

So far this year, there have been nine traffic fatalities on Hawaii Island compared to seven during the same period last year, an increase of 28.6 percent.

So far, two of the fatalities have been drug-related and none have been linked to alcohol, police said.

DUI roadblocks and patrols will continue islandwide.
